University of Illinois Launches New Housing Lottery Aimed at...

CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — A significant adjustment is underway at the University of Illinois regarding the housing sign-up process for returning students. Officials believe this revamped system offers a fairer approach for all involved.

Chris Axtman-Barker, the Associate Director of Communications and Marketing for University Housing, explained that this new procedure unfolds in multiple phases. The initial phase kicked off on October 20.

The first step required students to inform the university of their intention to reside in University Housing for the 2026-2027 academic year. Given the high demand and limited capacity, there is a strict cap on the number of returning students who can be accommodated.

Subsequently, those who expressed their intent to return were entered into a random lottery to decide the timing and possibility of room selection.

In cases where students either missed the deadline to notify the university or did not secure a time slot, they were placed on a waitlist. Following this, students were given the chance to select roommates, should they wish to do so.

The last step in the system is the “self-assignment” phase. Beginning at noon on Nov. 10, students can select their rooms, based on their assigned lottery time.

“Part of the reasoning we’re transitioning to this new system, we wanted something that gives equal opportunity to every student. We have seen a huge increase of demand. Of people who want to live on campus, they want to live with University Housing,” Axtman-Barker said. “Last year, we closed housing signup early, and we want to make sure opportunities are equal for every student. If someone wants to live on campus, they should have the same chances to do so as everyone else.”

Axtman-Barker added that the university expects demand and interest in University Housing and on-campus living to grow. In fact, they’re seeing interest in University Housing exceed the pace of enrollment growth.

“The main goal here is equity and fairness,” Axtman-Barker said. “We want to make sure that as more and more students are looking to live on campus and live with university housing, that everybody has an equal shot.”
