LOS ANGELES — Alex Vesia, a reliever for the Los Angeles Dodgers, along with his wife Kayla, shared the heartbreaking news of their child’s passing on Friday.
“Our beautiful daughter ascended to heaven on Sunday, October 26th,” the couple shared on social media. “Words fail to capture the depth of our sorrow, but we treasure every moment spent with her and hold her close in our hearts.”
Their daughter was named Sterling Sol Vesia. Accompanying the announcement was a poignant black and white photo showing their hands tenderly stacked with hers.
In their message, they extended heartfelt thanks to the Dodgers organization, their loyal fans, and the dedicated medical staff who supported Sterling and Kayla with such understanding.
“Our baseball family has been a pillar of support for us, and we couldn’t have navigated this without them,” they expressed. “Everyone we encountered was truly remarkable.”
The announcement comes a week after the team won the World Series in seven games against the Toronto Blue Jays. It was the Dodgers’ second straight World Series championship.
Ahead of the Dodgers’ appearance in Game 1, the team announced Vesia would be absent due to a “deeply personal family matter” but no other information was given.Â
Dodgers relievers wore Vesia’s No. 51 on their caps in a tribute to their absent teammate and fans wore his jersey in support. Blue Jays relievers joined them in the tribute for Game 6.
Vesia went 4-2 with a 3.02 ERA in 68 regular-season games. He is 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA in seven postseason appearances.
