The tax authority reports it receives nearly 1,000 tips weekly from individuals aware or suspicious of tax evasion activities involving businesses or individuals.
The Australian Tax Office (ATO) notes that most of these tips pertain to the ‘shadow economy’—economic activities that go unreported for taxation purposes. This includes scenarios like requesting cash-only payments or falsely declaring business expenses.
“Engaging in these practices not only creates an uneven playing field but is also illegal. Once apprehended, offenders don’t just owe back taxes; they face hefty fines, interest on unpaid amounts, and potentially criminal charges,” the ATO warns.
Victoria leads with 11,890 tip-offs, followed by Queensland with 10,630.
In regional rankings, Newcastle in New South Wales records the highest number of tips, followed by Robina, the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Townsville, and Toowoomba in Queensland.
The top industries flagged include building and construction, hospitality sectors like cafes and restaurants, as well as hairdressing and beauty services.
