A tragic incident unfolded in North Olmstead, a suburb of Cleveland, where an Ohio man is accused of fatally shooting his wife. The incident occurred after an argument, prompting the husband to call 911, claiming the gun discharged accidentally, leaving his wife on the ground and frightened, according to authorities.

Joseph Halpin, 42, now faces a murder charge following the death of his 39-year-old wife, Laura Hoopengardner. The shooting took place at their residence on Lorain Road. Halpin contacted emergency services around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, explaining that he had cocked a gun and it inadvertently fired, striking his wife in the abdomen, as detailed in a press release from the local police department.

During the distressing 911 call, Halpin described the scene, saying, “She’s on the ground. She’s scared.” In a conversation seemingly with another person, he was overheard insisting, “I didn’t mean to. The gun just went off.”

Emergency dispatchers instructed Halpin to apply pressure to the wound with clean cloths. Law enforcement officers arrived swiftly and upon entering the home, reportedly found Halpin holding a gun to his head.

“Put the gun down,” one officer urged, attempting to de-escalate the situation. “Dude, put it down! We can work this out, man! We can work this out! I don’t want to shoot you!” the officer pleaded, emphasizing the desire to resolve the tense standoff without further violence.

“Put the gun down,” an officer yelled. “Dude, put it down! We can work this out, man! We can work this out! I don’t want to shoot you!”

“This is not good,” a dispatcher said as he heard the situation play out.

After nearly two minutes, Halpin dropped the gun and cops took him into custody. They went inside and found Hoopengardner suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to the hospital where doctors pronounced her dead.

Cops say Halpin shot his wife after an argument but did not expand on what it was about. He does not have a criminal record and there were no prior reports about domestic violence in the home.

Halpin waived his preliminary hearing and is awaiting a decision from a grand jury about whether he will be indicted on the murder charge. He is currently in the Cuyahoga County Jail on a $1 million bond.
