A woman from Georgia faces murder charges following the discovery of her young daughter’s body in a recliner, according to authorities.
Shannen Grimes, aged 42, is currently held in the Fulton County Jail, accused of two counts of murder, child cruelty, possessing a weapon during a felony, and evidence tampering. Before her arrest on Tuesday, Grimes received medical treatment after an attempted suicide.
Sandy Springs Police reported that Grimes’ sister dialed 911 on November 14 after Grimes informed her about her suicide attempt. Officers responded to Grimes’ residence at Laurel Grove condominiums, where they found her with a wrist injury and her 11-year-old daughter, Genesis, lifeless and seated in a recliner.
As per arrest documents obtained by WANF, Grimes’ sister allowed police entry into the condo, where they discovered Grimes bleeding from a wrist wound on the couch. Genesis was located nearby in a recliner, covered up to her legs with a “blanket or towel,” and was declared deceased at the scene.
When questioned by police about the incident, Grimes reportedly replied, “I happened.”
An investigation revealed Genesis sustained at least four puncture wounds on her neck and shoulder area, yet there was “little to no blood.” Authorities noted that it seemed as though Genesis had been “cleaned and positioned in the recliner.”
Police said that blood was found throughout the house, including items that were seemingly used to “clean or capture some of the blood,” reportedly “blood-soaked paper towels,” trash cans and a bucket in the living room where Genesis’ body was found. Knives that appeared to be stained with blood were found near the kitchen sink.
According to the warrant, blood-soaked clothing and bedding were found in a box in Grimes’ bedroom, including a shirt that had “holes around the neck and shoulder area.”
While Grimes was in the ambulance on her way to the hospital, she allegedly admitted to police that she stabbed her daughter in the neck.
After being treated at the hospital, Grimes was booked into the Fulton County Jail where no bond amount has been listed.
