A Texas woman faces serious charges after allegedly confining her 22-year-old special needs daughter in a cage located in their backyard.
Kandy Thompson, 60, was taken into custody on Saturday following a neighbor’s call to the police. The neighbor had also filmed a confrontation with Thompson regarding the incident, as reported by KTAB.
Initially, Thompson faced a charge of injuring a child. However, by Tuesday, the charges escalated to include aggravated kidnapping, injury to a disabled person, unlawful restraint, endangering a disabled person, and assault/family violence.
The additional charges followed a thorough investigation by Anson Police officers, which involved further interviews, reviewing statements, and analyzing all evidence collected at the scene.
In the neighbor’s video, the young woman is heard crying and expressing fear from inside the cage, as the neighbor challenges Thompson. The neighbor offers comfort to the woman once authorities arrive. Police confirmed she has since been “removed from the unsafe environment” and is now under appropriate care and receiving protective services.
According to a local newspaper, Thompson and her late husband had provided care for many children with special needs over several decades. The state Department of Family Protective Services noted that none of these foster children were placed through their agency.
