A man in New York City has reported being set on fire during an incident on a subway near Times Square early Monday morning. However, police are exploring the possibility that the man may have ignited his own pants, according to media sources.

Police officers responded shortly after 3 a.m. to an ongoing assault report at the 42nd Street station in Times Square, as confirmed by the New York City Police Department.

The 55-year-old man, found on the platform with leg burns, informed officers that his pants were set on fire while he was sleeping on a 3-train subway car, police stated.

According to sources cited by the New York Post, evidence such as burnt skin remnants on one of the train seats and charred paper were discovered on the train.
