Shocking Discovery: Gainesville Man Caught After 18 Stolen Handguns Unearthed at Local Condo

Staff Report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In a significant breakthrough, authorities have apprehended 40-year-old Kevin Marcus Boyd in connection with a series of car break-ins, following the unearthing of 18 firearms near a condominium complex pool.

The Gainesville Police Department had been on Boyd’s trail since early March, focusing on a string of vehicle burglaries that occurred in the pre-dawn hours of March 5.

According to the arrest report, surveillance footage captured a man, described as a black male wearing a ski mask and gloves, targeting vehicles in neighborhoods off NW 24th Boulevard. Between 1:25 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. that day, the suspect was seen riding a bicycle, testing car door handles, and entering unlocked vehicles. At one location, he rifled through a backpack; at another, he took an unspecified amount of change from a car’s console; and at a third, he made off with a pistol. Two other attempts were thwarted as the vehicles were securely locked.

Additional surveillance footage from a gas station at NW 53rd Avenue and NW 43rd Street captured Boyd around 3 a.m. that same morning. The video showed him abandoning a bicycle in nearby bushes before entering the store. He wore attire resembling that of the burglary suspect, minus the jacket, mask, and gloves.

Further investigation led to an interview with an individual familiar with Boyd, who confidently identified him as the man seen in the gas station video. Moreover, surveillance footage documented the suspect’s movement along a route from the burglary sites to the gas station between 2:30 a.m. and 3 a.m.

On October 13, a citizen contacted a GPD officer to report finding pistols buried next to the community pool clubhouse at Cumberland Circle (1900 NW 16th Terrace). Officers reportedly found 18 pistols in food storage containers “in a shallow grave,” about 15 feet from the front gate. A detective determined that 13 of the 18 guns had been reported stolen from vehicles, predominantly in the northwest area of Gainesville, throughout 2025. One of the firearms buried there was the one stolen on March 5.

Video surveillance in the area of the Cumberland Circle pool clubhouse reportedly showed Boyd climbing the fence to enter the pool area on September 18 and September 23; he can be seen approaching the area where the guns were buried on September 24, and he is also seen walking in that area on October 13.

The detective sent a search warrant to Boyd’s cell phone provider and confirmed that Boyd was in the area of the vehicle burglaries on March 5 and also at Cumberland Circle at the times he is shown on surveillance video.

Boyd has been charged with four counts of unarmed burglary of a vehicle, armed burglary of a vehicle, grand theft of a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He has six felony convictions (non-violent) and 12 misdemeanor convictions (non-violent); he has served one state prison sentence and was released in August 2023. Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $300,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
