Man Arrested for Burglary After Entering Stranger’s Pool Enclosure

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Alex James McGlothlin, 42, was arrested early Oct. 31 after authorities said he entered a pool enclosure in the fenced backyard of a home in Avalon.

At approximately 1:28 a.m., Alachua County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a woman’s report that an unfamiliar man was watching her through the back door of her home. She told deputies the man was inside the pool enclosure in her fenced backyard.

Deputies established a perimeter and heard a man’s voice coming from the backyard. After the woman confirmed that no one was supposed to be there, deputies located McGlothlin lying on a trampoline.

According to deputies, McGlothlin told them the home belonged to his aunt.

Deputies ordered him to get off the trampoline and lie on the ground. He got off the trampoline but allegedly refused to lie down, slowly backed away from the deputies and then ran toward the backyard fence.

One deputy used a Taser, causing McGlothlin to fall. When he attempted to get up, the deputy deployed the Taser a second time, after which McGlothlin complied with the commands.

During a search following his arrest, deputies found a folding pocketknife in the front pocket of McGlothlin’s clothing.

After McGlothlin was taken into custody, the woman told deputies that a camera notification alerted her to activity near the back door. When she went to investigate, she saw a white man staring at her through the window from inside the pool enclosure. She said he asked for water, and she responded by shaking her head. The man then moved to the side of the door and tried to hide in the corner beside it, according to her statement. He later walked into the backyard, where she could no longer see him.

McGlothlin faces charges of armed burglary, resisting an officer without violence and prowling. He has no local criminal history. His complete criminal history was unavailable because those records are not posted on weekends. Judge Adam Lee ordered McGlothlin held without bail pending a hearing on a State Attorney’s Office motion seeking to keep him jailed without bail through trial. If the motion is denied, bail will be set at that hearing.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
