An intoxicated father from Ohio is facing serious charges after allegedly hitting his 6-month-old child in the face during a violent altercation intended for the child’s mother. The man, identified as Avery Mapes, later resisted police intervention at a hospital, attempting to bite officers multiple times, as documented in court records.

The incident took place when Mapes, 23, was reportedly in an intoxicated state and became aggressive towards his fiancée, who is also the mother of his child. According to a probable cause statement, his behavior escalated into a fit of rage where he shouted racial slurs and created a chaotic scene at the hospital.

Mapes now faces charges that include assault, endangering children, domestic violence, obstruction, and disorderly conduct. The charges stem from an incident on Thursday when law enforcement responded to a domestic violence report at the couple’s residence in Toledo.

Upon their arrival, officers observed visible signs of violence on Mapes’ fiancée, including “several marks and bruises.” The court documents reveal that Mapes attempted to hit her multiple times while she was holding their infant, ultimately striking the baby, leaving the child with “multiple red marks and bruising.”

Further evidence of the assault was found on the woman’s clothing, with police noting “bloody handprints” on the back of her hoodie. The probable cause statement details that Mapes charged at his fiancée, leading to the injuries on her forehead and arm, which appeared to have been forcefully squeezed.

Following his arrest, Mapes’ conduct continued to be aggressive and uncooperative at the hospital, resulting in additional charges for his actions against law enforcement officers.

After being transported to a local medical facility, Mapes was handcuffed to a bed, which he allegedly dragged around his hospital room in an attempt to assault officers. He attempted to “kick and strike” medical staff members and “continued to yell racial slurs and profanities” while at the facility, police allege.

“The defendant refused to follow commands,” court documents say.

Mapes was released on his own recognizance with an electronic monitoring device and was ordered to stay away from his fiancee and child. He is due in court on Dec. 17.
