‘Miracle on Ice’ Team Visits White House for Great Honor, Gives Pres. Trump Historic Souvenir

There aren’t many moments when I find myself feeling a twinge of envy towards President Donald Trump, given the burdensome responsibilities of his role. However, last Friday was an exception. I found myself longing to be in the Oval Office when the legendary 1980 U.S. Men’s Hockey team, known for their “Miracle on Ice” victory, received a special tribute.

The White House shared a video on X featuring President Trump as he signed the Congressional Gold Medal Act (H.R. 452) into law. Surrounding him were 13 members of the iconic team, donning white cowboy hats reminiscent of their attire during the opening ceremonies of the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York.

The post accompanying the video read: “President Donald Trump honors the 1980 ‘Miracle on Ice’ U.S. Men’s Hockey team.” It highlighted the team’s remarkable achievement during the Cold War era, where they surpassed all expectations by defeating the formidable USSR, despite having no Olympic or professional experience.

“This is very exciting. This is one of the greatest moments in the history of U.S. sports,” Trump said. “I wouldn’t say, maybe, for other countries, they weren’t so thrilled. But for U.S. sports, and we have a very exciting team of champions standing behind me right now.”

Trump then called on a White House attorney to read the bill, which states that “Congress has authorized three medals to be struck, commemorating the historic victory of the U.S. Men’s Hockey Team in 1980 at the Lake Placid Olympics, where they obviously defeated the Soviet Union in the famous Miracle on Ice hockey game.”
