In a recent media briefing, Howard expressed his concerns about the insufficient efforts to combat the rise of antisemitism since October 7, 2023, emphasizing the urgent need for action. He described the situation as a stark reminder that such hatred can indeed manifest anywhere, shattering any illusions of immunity.
Howard underscored the gravity of the situation, stating, “This tragic event should serve as a wake-up call for those who have been inattentive.” He stressed the obvious accountability of the perpetrators, noting, “The responsibility for these murders lies squarely with the murderers.”
Furthermore, Howard criticized Prime Minister Albanese, accusing him of failing to demonstrate the moral leadership expected in such critical times. “His greatest shortcoming is his inability to strongly condemn antisemitism,” Howard asserted, pointing out that Albanese often seemed to generalize the issue by equating it with broader discrimination rather than addressing it directly.
“Clearly, the people to blame for the murders are the murderers, and that’s apparent,” he said.
“(Albanese’s) greatest failure is not to provide the moral leadership that a prime minister can in denouncing antisemitism,” he said.
“The impression I had was that every time he got onto the subject, he would equate it with discrimination generally.”
The crack down, which made automatic and semi-automatic weapons illegal, was spearheaded by Howard’s first government.
Today, he said the focus on gun control was “welcome, always”, but that the broader issue of antisemitism should be the focus.
