South Carolina Republicans Sweep Special Elections

In a decisive display of political dominance, South Carolina Republicans emerged victorious in all three special legislative elections held on Tuesday. The party hailed these results as a significant indication of their stronghold, underscoring the message they believe resonates with the electorate.

The elections saw incumbents Reps. John Lastinger and Dianne Mitchell, along with Sen. Lee Bright, securing their positions with notable ease. A total of 8,729 ballots were cast, reflecting the support these candidates enjoy within their constituencies.

Mitchell and Bright delivered commanding performances, each capturing over 70 and 67 percent of the vote, respectively. The remaining votes were attributed to various write-in candidates, highlighting the lack of serious competition on their ballots.

In a more contested race, John Lastinger, a pastor, successfully defended his seat against Democrat challenger retired Army Col. Joseph “Chuck” Hightower, securing 62 percent compared to Hightower’s 37 percent. Less than one percent of the votes were allocated to write-in options.

However, the elections were marked by low voter engagement, with only about seven percent of registered voters in State House Districts 21 and 88, as well as State Senate District 12, participating in the electoral process.

Reflecting on their success, the South Carolina Republican Party took to social media to express gratitude to their supporters, stating, “Republicans won all three special elections, and that success belongs to the voters who showed up.” This victory underscores the party’s current momentum and the commitment of those who cast their ballots.

“While Democrats hoped low turnout would hand them a win, Republicans proved them wrong at the ballot box. We didn’t sit this one out. We showed up, voted, and protected conservative leadership across South Carolina,” the SCGOP continued. “Thank you to every voter who took time away from family gatherings, travel, and holiday plans to make your voice heard. That commitment is why we win.”

“Tonight’s results send a clear message: South Carolina Republicans show up when it matters and we’re heading into 2026 organized, energized, and stronger than ever.”
