A man from Minnesota has been charged with murder following an incident where he allegedly shot the mother of his children before attempting to take his own life.

Demarco Jones, aged 29, is currently recovering in a Minnesota hospital after a botched murder-suicide attempt on December 24th. According to a press statement from Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena, Jones faces charges of second-degree intentional murder for the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Tatianna Ehnes-Giles. Her body was discovered by her mother, who shared the residence. As per a criminal complaint cited by Law&Crime, the couple’s two young children were present in the home at the time of the shooting.

Deputies from the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from Ehnes-Giles’ mother at 2:23 p.m. on December 24th. She reported that her daughter had been “shot in the head by her boyfriend,” later identified as Jones. Ehnes-Giles’ mother also mentioned that Jones might have shot himself and was lying on the bedroom floor in a “trance-like” state.

Upon arrival, deputies found Jones able to inform them that the gun used in the alleged shooting was still in the bedroom. Authorities subsequently recovered the weapon along with two spent shell casings. Ehnes-Giles was declared dead at the scene, and Jones was transported to the hospital for treatment.

According to the complaint, Ehnes-Giles’ mother reported that one of the children rushed to her after being frightened by a loud noise. Both children then informed their grandmother, “Daddy fell.” Ehnes-Giles’ mother recounted to the police that she found Jones on the floor “groaning.” He reportedly stated, “I’ve been shot. She shot me, call 911,” before allegedly confessing, “I shot her.”

The mother also told police that she found her daughter “covered in blood, with her hands in front of her face as if she was protecting herself.”

Deputies spoke to Ehnes-Giles’ brother, who was also at the house at the time and said Jones told him that “he shot himself and caught [Ehnes-Giles] cheating.”

Jones was charged with second-degree intentional murder and is in custody while receiving treatment at the hospital. He will be booked into the Dakota County Jail after he is medically cleared, with a bond set at $2 million. His court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 5.
