An Idaho woman is facing serious charges after reportedly shooting her boyfriend in the leg during a dispute about cookies, a situation she later described to law enforcement as accidental.

Katheryn Welch, 53, was released on bond following her arrest on December 23. She is charged with aggravated battery, tampering with evidence, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. According to information from local CBS station KMVT, deputies from the Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office were alerted to a shooting at the residence shared by Welch and her boyfriend. On arrival, officers found the home unresponsive, leading them to force entry.

Inside, authorities encountered a man with blood-stained trousers and a hole near his right knee, noticeably favoring his left leg as he moved.

The Times-News, another local source, acquired the affidavit revealing that a relative of the boyfriend placed the 911 call, indicating the shooting had occurred days earlier.

When deputies inquired about the home’s occupants, the man confirmed Welch was present. Questioned about the shooting location, the man did not initially respond, prompting a deputy to inquire, “Was it right there in the knee where your leg is bleeding?” The man acknowledged this was correct.

Welch complied with officers’ requests to exit the home with her hands raised, subsequently explaining to the police that the shooting was an “accident” following a quarrel over Christmas cookies. She allegedly confessed to having discarded the firearm along a road.

After obtaining a search warrant, deputies searched the home and found blood spatter underneath a desk along with a .22-caliber bullet casing. They also found a substance that was later confirmed to be methamphetamine. The gun was not found.

Welch was arrested and booked into the Twin Falls County Jail. She posted $75,000 bond on Monday and was released. Her next court date is scheduled for Jan. 9, 2026.
