Shelter-in-place lifted after failed burglary leads to shooting in Columbia County, deputies say

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is reaching out to residents, asking them to review their home security videos in hopes of identifying a suspect.

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — UPDATE 2:30 P.M.

First Coast News has obtained further details about a recently rescinded shelter-in-place order in Columbia County.

According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, officers responded to a call at approximately 10:43 a.m. regarding a shooting incident at a residence on SW Michigan St. Upon their arrival, they discovered a woman who had been shot, lying in the yard of an apartment complex.

After being taken from the location, the woman informed authorities that she encountered “a tall male dressed in dark clothing” inside her apartment before being shot.

In response, the sheriff’s office swiftly established a perimeter in the vicinity of SW Michigan St. and SW Marion St. to secure the area.

Upon making entry into the apartment, the agency says that the alleged shooter had already fled the scene.

The agency asks the community to review any home surveillance footage in search of the suspect. Any information is to be sent to CCSO at (386) 719-2005. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers of Columbia County at (386) 754-7099 or www.crimestoppers.net.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office posted the following statement on Facebook:

“Due to a recent burglary that occurred in the area of SW Michigan St/SW Marion (US-441), CCSO is requesting anyone in the area with any type of doorbell camera or home security cameras to check and report any suspicious person/vehicle anytime this morning back to us.”

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office says that a shelter-in-place has been enacted on Monday afternoon due to an alleged shooting.

Police say that the precaution is for the area of SW Michigan Street and S Marion Street, where they say to expect “a heavy law enforcement presence.”

This is a developing story.
