Authorities have reported an alleged scheme targeting elderly women at shopping center parking lots, known as the “bonnet up” scam. This deceptive operation reportedly unfolded between last Saturday and yesterday.
In this scam, one man distracts the victim by engaging them with a fake mechanical issue, prompting them to look under their car’s bonnet. Meanwhile, his accomplice is accused of pilfering valuables from the unsuspecting victim’s vehicle, taking items such as wallets, purses, and cash.
The duo’s alleged criminal activities spanned across 15 different suburbs and towns, illustrating the extensive reach of their operation.
Both suspects were apprehended and taken to Taree Police Station, where they each faced an astonishing 72 charges. These charges encompass fraud, theft, and unauthorized entry into a vehicle.
They have been denied bail and are scheduled to appear in court today to address these serious allegations.
In the meantime, police continue their investigation and are actively searching for two additional individuals believed to be connected to this case.
Releasing CCTV footage, police are searching for two Caucasian men in their 40s, who were both wearing hats and blue face masks.
