CNN's Campbell: Looks Like ICE Agent 'Likely Struck by That Car', But Question Is if He Could Have Jumped Away

During Friday’s edition of “The Brief” on CNN International, Senior Correspondent Josh Campbell analyzed the video footage of a shooting incident in Minneapolis. He noted that law enforcement training typically advises officers to avoid positioning themselves in front of vehicles. Campbell observed, however, that from different angles, it appears the officer might have been hit by the car. This situation could potentially justify the use of force, as an agent might claim a threat to their life. Nonetheless, Campbell highlighted significant uncertainties about whether the officer could have evaded the vehicle, questioning if alternative actions were possible.

Campbell elaborated on the incident by explaining, “The officer placed himself in the vehicle’s path, which goes against standard training across the nation. Officers are taught to avoid such scenarios. However, as the driver turned the wheel and moved forward, it seems the officer was likely struck. Policy allows agents to defend themselves if they perceive a life-threatening situation. Yet, critical questions remain about the officer’s positioning and whether he could have dodged the car instead.”

Further addressing the incident, Campbell emphasized the responsibility that comes with discharging a weapon. “Any officer who fires a gun must account for every shot and consider the potential for collateral damage,” he stated. In this particular case, the agent fired in the direction of bystanders, yet, fortunately, no one else was injured. Campbell underscored the importance of accountability in such high-stakes situations.
