A resurfaced video from over a decade ago has reignited interest in Roy Keane’s contentious comments about Michael Carrick, pointing to the possible origins of their long-standing feud. This old footage has recently gone viral, drawing attention to a confrontation that has simmered beneath the surface for years.

In a recent episode of the “Stick to Football” podcast, the former Manchester United star, Keane, took an unexpected swipe at Carrick’s wife, Lisa Roughead. While discussing Carrick’s potential managerial capabilities, Keane quipped, “His wife can always come in if Carrick doesn’t do well, cause she’s got a bit of a big mouth sometimes. She’s probably doing the team talk.” This remark has since sparked a significant reaction among fans on social media.

As the football world turns its attention to Carrick’s upcoming challenge at the Manchester derby at Old Trafford, both Keane and Gary Neville are set to cover the event for Sky Sports. Notably, Neville has expressed skepticism about Carrick securing a permanent managerial position, regardless of his performance in the coming months.

Keane’s recent comments have brought past tensions back into the spotlight, particularly recalling a minor altercation with Lisa in 2014. Internet detectives have unearthed the video that reportedly started it all, showcasing Carrick during a post-match interview with ITV’s Gabriel Clarke following Manchester United’s lackluster 2-0 loss to Olympiacos in the Champions League.

Keane’s jibe has reopened old wounds after his brief spat with Lisa back in 2014 and internet sleuths have dug out the footage that sparked it all.

In the clip, Carrick gives a post-match interview to ITV’s Gabriel Clarke after Man United’s dreary 2-0 defeat by Olympiacos in the Champions League.

Carrick looks deflated and says: ‘It’s everyone involved, it’s how we’re judged and we know that. We’re still in the tie, we’re going home, we’re not out of it at all so we look forward to the second leg.’

Presenter Adrian Chiles then addresses pundits Keane and Lee Dixon, saying: ‘He looks about as amazed as the rest of us at what we’ve just seen, sort of just shocked.’

Keane replied cuttingly: ‘That interview was just like their performance, flat.’

Chiles then came back, saying: ‘What do you want him to do, fall at Gabriel’s feet crying?’

‘Well, say a bit more. A bit more urgency in even his interview. That just reflected United’s performance tonight, flat, no urgency.

‘They keep saying, “next game, next game”, for some of them there won’t be another game for them, that’s the reality for it,’ a stony-faced Keane retorted.

After watching Keane’s reaction to her husband, Lisa took to social media and wrote: ‘Roy Keane what a ****, says anything to provoke a reaction.’

She then hastily deleted her post and regretfully added: ‘Deleted my tweet… Emotions got the better of me.’

On Thursday, the feud was reignited but 24 hours later when asked at his first press conference at Carrington if the comment from the Irishman felt personal, Carrick said: ‘Honestly, it didn’t bother me.’

On the wider issue of criticism from Keane and other ex-United players which have plagued a succession of United bosses, Carrick added: ‘They’re not putting more pressure on me, I don’t feel that. I think it’s just part of it, I understand the role, there’s plenty of opinions around, some are positive, some aren’t so much.

‘I think in some ways for me, in terms of you saying about putting pressure, for me it’s totally relevant in terms of me and how I go to work and what I focus on. I kind of know already what we want to improve on and how we want to work with the players and I’ve already said about improving things, there’s a lot of opinions, a lot can be said.

‘It is the way of the world, I’m not going to pay too much attention to the most of that. It’s not for me to do that, I think for me and the players and the staff it’s a focus on how we’re going to succeed really. That’s our job, that’s our responsibility, that’s what our focus and our minds should be at, is doing what we can for this club.’

On Friday afternoon, Carrick insisted he was not bothered by Keane's remark

Carrick and Lisa began dating when they were at school and tied the knot in 2007. They have two children together – Louie and Jacey, who is in the United academy.

Earlier in the episode, Keane had taken a swipe at the selections Carrick made for his backroom staff, citing the lack of coaching experience of Jonathan Woodgate and Jonny Evans.

He’ll be supported along the way by his wife, who has been by his side for 29 years

The 44-year-old tends to avoid the limelight and helps run the Michael Carrick Foundation to support disadvantaged children. She previously had her own Pilates business.

No doubt there will be plenty of other opportunities for Keane to critique the Man United interim boss, who begins his short reign with a tough game against Man City on Saturday.
