A new safety recall has been announced by Ford, impacting approximately 119,000 vehicles due to a potential fire hazard linked to faulty engine block heaters, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

This recall targets specific models including certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles, all equipped with 2.0L engines. Additionally, it includes some 2016-2018 Focus and 2019 and 2024 Explorer models.

The NHTSA reports that the defect involves engine block heaters that may crack, leading to coolant leaks. When these compromised heaters are plugged in, they risk short-circuiting, thereby posing a serious fire risk.

Ford has issued a statement highlighting the increased danger of under-hood fires occurring when these vehicles are parked with the engine block heater connected to a 110-volt power supply.

In light of this, Ford advises owners of the affected vehicles to cease using their engine block heaters immediately. The company emphasizes that the fire hazard exists only when the heaters are connected to an electrical outlet.

It is crucial for vehicle owners to heed this warning and refrain from plugging their engine block heaters into any power source until a resolution is provided. Ford is working to address the issue and ensure customer safety.

Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be in the mail Feb. 13, and more letters will be sent once the final repair is available, which the NHTSA expects will be in April.

Ford said it is developing a new block heater element and that once it becomes available, customers can visit a Ford dealer for a free replacement.

Another option is to have the vehicle’s block heater removed and a threaded plug installed at a Ford dealer, the company said. Ford said dealers will provide that service free of charge.
