In a recent development, Florida’s Department of Health has unveiled concerning test results regarding candy products from ten different companies. These findings were shared on Monday, highlighting a pressing issue that has prompted state officials to take action.

In The Villages, Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis, alongside First Lady Casey DeSantis and Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo, addressed the media to discuss these alarming results. They are spearheading efforts to hold candy manufacturers accountable, claiming that several products contain dangerously high levels of arsenic.

This initiative is part of the broader “Healthy Florida First” campaign, which aims to foster innovation, ensure accountability, and empower citizens in making informed health choices. The focus is on creating a transparent food system and rebuilding public trust through actions grounded in evidence.

Governor DeSantis emphasized the importance of transparency to this mission, stating, “Our ‘Healthy Florida First’ initiative promotes innovation, ensures accountability, and empowers Floridians to make the healthiest choices for their families. Transparency is vital to that mission.”

The Florida Department of Health’s investigation revealed that out of 46 candy products tested, 28 were found to contain arsenic. These findings underscore the need for stricter scrutiny and regulation of food products to safeguard public health.

As a result, state health officials report that they found arsenic in 28 of the 46 candy products tested.

Some of the candies listed with arsenic include Nerds, SweetTarts, Jolly Ranchers, Twizzlers and KitKats.

“Food is an essential part of life, and we need it to be as safe and nutritious as possible,” Dr. Ladapo said in a statement. “We believe that evaluating risks and communicating our findings to the public are essentially steps for driving the change we seek in the food industry and improving the health of Floridians.”

Similar testing was done earlier this month involving 24 baby formula brands, where 16 of them contained at least one, if not more, heavy metals at levels that exceeded federal standards. This included arsenic, mercury, cadmium and lead.

“As parents and consumers, we should have confidence that the products sold in grocery stores are safe and free from poison,” First Lady DeSantis said. “No one should have to wonder whether the food that they are feeding their children is quietly impacting their health over time. Through independent testing under the Healthy Florida First initiative, we are bringing sunlight and transparency to the quality of food in our food supply.”

What is arsenic?

Arsenic is a natural component of the earth’s crust that is highly toxic in its inorganic form, according to the World Health Organization. It can spread through the environment in the air, water and land.

People are at risk of being exposed to arsenic mostly through drinking contaminated water, using contaminated water in food preparation and irrigation of food crops, industrial processes, eating contaminated food and smoking tobacco.

Symptoms of arsenic poisoning include vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea. These are followed by numbness and tingling of the extremities, muscle cramping and death, in extreme cases.

Long-term effects of exposure to high levels of inorganic arsenic include pigmentation changes, skin lesions and hard patches on the palms and soles of the feet. These can be a precursor to skin cancer.
