Apple is urging Australians using older models of iPhones and Apple Watches to update their software, aiming to reduce the risk of potential connectivity problems when making emergency calls.

This warning, initially issued in December, followed incidents where older smartphones faced a “technical failure.” This failure prevented users from connecting with alternate networks for emergency calls to triple-zero when their primary network was unavailable.

Originally, the advisory focused on iPhone 12 models. However, Apple has now expanded the alert to include additional older iPhone models and Apple Watches.

In a statement, Apple mentioned, “In the rare instance that similar exceptional circumstances affecting mobile operators’ networks occur again, some older devices might still face issues connecting to emergency services via an alternative network.”

Apple specified that this network connectivity problem could affect a range of older devices.
