A man accused of severely assaulting another passenger on a Chicago train will avoid any prison time, as reported by local news sources.

Jesus Ramirez, 45, will not face incarceration for his alleged violent attack on a fellow traveler aboard a CTA Pink Line train on April 10, 2024, according to court documents referenced by CWBChicago.

Ramirez entered a guilty plea to aggravated battery earlier this week. Although he was sentenced to two years, he received credit for more than a year spent under electronic monitoring. Additionally, his sentence was effectively reduced by half under Illinois regulations that apply to most offenses.

Following the incident in April, the Chicago Police Department sought the public’s help to identify the suspect involved in the assault on the public transit system.

According to police reports, Ramirez allegedly confronted a CTA passenger and struck the victim in the face. The attack reportedly continued with Ramirez delivering multiple punches and kicks to the victim’s face and body.

The department said that Ramirez and the 37-year-old victim did not know each other when they crossed paths. Authorities said that the pair exchanged words and the situation turned physical.

The escalation and attack was caught on surveillance video and the Chicago Police Department released photos of the suspect, later identified as Ramirez.

According to CWBChicago, the victim spent about a week in a coma and roughly two months hospitalized with a scattered brain bleed, traumatic brain injury, broken ribs, a temporal bone fracture, ear damage, and a fractured nasal bone.

During an early court appearance, Judge Ankur Srivastava said that Ramirez “nearly beat [the] victim to death on the CTA.”

Ramirez was initially booked in the Cook County Jail with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm charges, but three months later he was released on an ankle monitor.
