Fatal Dispute Over Loud Music: Orange County Neighbor Charged in Deadly Shooting

In a tragic turn of events in Orange County, Florida, a 32-year-old man has been charged with the murder of his neighbor, stemming from a dispute over loud music and noise. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the arrest of Michael Thrasher, who was taken into custody on Wednesday, marking a week since the unfortunate incident.

The altercation took place on January 21st, when deputies were called to the 1200 block of Moselle Avenue, close to Old Cheney Highway and State Road 436. Upon arrival, they discovered 38-year-old Arnold Rapatalo suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Rapatalo succumbed to his injuries.

An affidavit for the arrest warrant reveals that the conflict began when Thrasher left his apartment to confront Rapatalo over the noise levels coming from Rapatalo’s unit. Surveillance footage played a crucial role in the investigation, capturing Thrasher aggressively kicking and pounding on Rapatalo’s door. The video evidence shows Thrasher attempting to open the door handle and, upon Rapatalo answering, forcing the door wider while using his foot to keep it ajar.

These developments have shocked the local community and highlight the severe consequences that can arise from neighborhood disputes. As the case unfolds, it serves as a sobering reminder of the need for peaceful conflict resolution.

The sheriff’s office said surveillance video showed Thrasher kicking and banging on Rapatalo’s door, including trying the door handle, to force entry. Once Rapatalo opened the door, deputies said the video showed Thrasher push open door even more and stick his foot out to keep the door open.

Deputies said the two argued before it turned physical and Thrasher hit Rapatalo at least once before the two went back outside Rapatalo’s apartment. While the two were fighting outside the apartment, Thrasher backed up, pulled a gun from his waistband and shot once toward Rapatalo’s chest, deputies said.

“It was just a big boom, like a shotgun blast,” said Derek Williams, who lives nearby.

Thrasher faces charges of first-degree murder (engaged in burglary) and armed burglary of an occupied dwelling with battery.
