ORLANDO, Fla. – A rare and severe cold snap is on the horizon for Central Florida, prompting urgent preparations. The National Weather Service has announced an Extreme Cold Watch for much of the region, sparing only Sumter County, from Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon.

As temperatures are expected to plunge into the 20s on Sunday morning, the threat of dangerously cold wind chills looms, with potential drops to a biting 7 degrees. Under such conditions, even brief exposure to the elements could result in frostbite or hypothermia.

Adding to the chill, strong gusty winds are predicted to sweep through on Saturday, potentially reaching speeds of 35 to 45 mph or more, exacerbating the cold’s impact. These freezing temperatures pose risks to crops, delicate plants, and may also challenge unprotected outdoor plumbing systems.

Extreme Cold Watch

Residents are advised to complete preparations by Saturday morning. If venturing outdoors, wearing layers and covering exposed skin is crucial. It’s equally important to bring pets inside, verify the safety of elderly family members and neighbors, and ensure the cautious use of space heaters. It’s imperative to avoid using generators or grills indoors to prevent hazards. Protecting pipes from the cold is also key—wrap them, allow faucets to drip, or drain them. Additionally, safeguarding tender plants against the cold is essential.

Saturday into Sunday

Preparations should be finished by Saturday morning. If you need to go outside, dress in layers and cover exposed skin. Bring pets indoors, check on elderly family members and neighbors, and use space heaters safely. Never use generators or grills indoors. To protect pipes, wrap them, drain them, or allow faucets to drip slowly. Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.

Hard freeze expected across the region
