A Minnesota man was arrested and charged with impersonating an FBI agent after he tried to enter a federal jail and release suspected murderer Luigi Mangione, police sources said.
Mark Anderson, 36, arrived at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn, New York, on Wednesday evening claiming he was an FBI agent with a court order for Mangione’s release, according to a criminal complaint filed yesterday and a law enforcement source.

According to a recent complaint, when Bureau of Prisons officials requested identification from a man, he presented a Minnesota driver’s license.

In the federal trial concerning this individual, the presiding judge announced that jury selection is scheduled to begin on September 8. Opening statements are set for October if the judge decides that the Justice Department cannot seek the death penalty. However, if the capital charge is upheld, the trial will commence in January 2027.

A decision on this matter is anticipated today.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, which initially charged the man with murder, petitioned the judge in the state case to schedule its trial for July—two months ahead of the federal trial.

Assistant District Attorney Joel Seidemann emphasized that the murder occurred in Manhattan. He pointed out that the investigation was spearheaded by his office in collaboration with the New York Police Department, and noted that the state indictment was issued before the federal complaint.

“The State has a compelling interest in prosecuting this defendant for the cold-blooded murder of Brian Thompson on December 4, 2024. This incident led to the tragic death of a visitor to our city,” Seidemann stated.

“Federal law supports our request that we proceed first and our right to a speedy resolution of this case would be severely compromised should the federal trial proceed first.”

In a statement, Mangione’s lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, said they needed time to prepare for the federal trial.
