On Monday, authorities apprehended a man in Queens following a car theft that unexpectedly turned into a kidnapping. The incident involved a 72-year-old man who was seated in the back of the stolen vehicle, police reported.
The elderly man was in the backseat of a running 2016 Subaru parked near 44th Drive and 23rd Street in Long Island City when the thief jumped into the driver’s seat and drove away at around 7:13 p.m. on January 17, according to police.
Shortly after, the suspect left both the vehicle and the unsuspecting passenger approximately two miles away in Maspeth, as stated by the authorities.
Two weeks later, police arrested 30-year-old Dominic Kanin after releasing MTA surveillance footage of the individual they were seeking. He now faces charges of grand larceny, kidnapping, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and unlawful imprisonment, law enforcement officials revealed.
Kanin resides in the Cambria Heights area of Queens and, according to law enforcement, has no previous criminal record.
