An unusual culinary offering has captured attention in a German university canteen: kangaroo chilli.
This distinctive dish, accompanied by Basmati rice, was recently featured on the menu at a university canteen in Erlangen, Bavaria, as reported by Münchner Merkur on Sunday.
According to the communications team at Friedrich Alexander University, while some diners sought confirmation that the meat was indeed kangaroo, the meal was generally well-received by patrons.
“Approximately 400 portions were planned, all of which sold out, and we received numerous positive comments,” the university shared with the newspaper.

A Reddit user highlighted the menu’s unique choice under the title: When the canteen ventures into experimental territory once more.
On the platform, users engaged in discussions about the flavor experience.
“Can highly recommend kangaroo, tastes very good,” one person wrote.
Directly below came an opposite opinion: “Kangaroo meat tastes disgusting.”
Kangaroos in abundance
There was an estimated population of 58 million kangaroos in Australia in 2002. They are among the most abundant large wild land mammal on earth.
There are 48 species of macropods in Australia and of these, only five can be commercially harvested. In addition, two species of wallaby are harvested in Tasmania.
The kangaroo industry is worth around $200 million per year and directly employs 4,000 people.
