'Overwhelmed by the number of children she has': Mom withholds son's liver disease meds, causing organ to fail and requiring 'immediate transplant,' cops say

A Florida mother is facing serious allegations after authorities claim she neglected to administer crucial liver medication to her teenage son, resulting in the organ’s failure and necessitating an urgent transplant procedure.

According to the Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office, 36-year-old Edmonde Devalon has been charged with child abuse causing great bodily harm. Investigators assert that Devalon did not provide her 15-year-old son, who suffers from an unspecified liver disease, with his essential medication for a period of at least six months.

This omission reportedly led to the failure of the boy’s liver, ultimately requiring an immediate transplant, as detailed in a probable cause affidavit.

During a post-Miranda interview, Devalon allegedly admitted that she stopped giving the medication in mid-2022, citing the overwhelming responsibility of caring for multiple children. She acknowledged being aware of the critical nature of the medication and the life-threatening risks posed by withholding it, according to the police report.

The affidavit, filed on February 11, does not specify the timeline of the boy’s illness or the transplant, nor does it explain how authorities were alerted to the situation. The current condition of the boy has also not been disclosed.

The affidavit, which was filed on Feb. 11, did not say when the boy fell ill or when he received a new liver. It also did not say how cops learned about the situation, nor did it give the boy’s updated condition.

The alleged crime occurred at Devalon’s home on NE 195th Street, cops say.

Cops took Devalon into custody on Tuesday. She remained at the Miami-Dade Jail on a $5,000 bond as of Wednesday afternoon. If she posts the bond, she is ordered to have only supervised contact with the victim, per records. Her next court date has yet to be listed.
