Man charged with terrorism offence after traffic stop leads to raid on Sydney home
A man has been charged with a terrorism offence after police analysed phones they seized during a traffic stop in Sydney’s south-west.

In an event that unfolded on December 31, a routine patrol led officers to halt a Toyota sedan on Dargan Street in Yagoona. During the search of the vehicle, authorities reportedly confiscated drugs, cash, and three mobile phones.

A 31-year-old man was apprehended at the scene and later taken to Bankstown Police Station. He faced charges for supplying prohibited drugs, handling crime proceeds under $5000, and operating a non-compliant light vehicle.

Initially denied bail, the man appeared in court on January 1, where he was subsequently granted conditional bail. The investigation took a more serious turn when the examination of the seized mobile phones allegedly revealed violent extremist content.

This discovery prompted a raid at a Bass Hill residence around 6 a.m. the following day. During the search, police reportedly found additional mobile phones, storage devices, and a knife.

A 31-year-old man was arrested and taken to Bansktown Police Station where he was charged with possessing violent extremist material and possessing or using a prohibited weapon without a permit.

He was refused bail and appeared at Bankstown Local Court yesterday, where he was granted conditional bail to appear back in court on March 3.
