Controversy Erupts as Mamdani Demands 5 Forms of ID for Shoveling Amid DSA’s Voter ID Opposition

New York City is experiencing a flurry of regulations with a touch of irony.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani, known for his progressive stance against ID requirements for voting, has instituted a stringent identification process for those wishing to clear the city’s snow.

According to the New York City Sanitation Department’s online portal, anyone looking to become an emergency snow shoveler must submit two small photographs, each measuring between 1 and 1.5 square inches, alongside two original IDs and their copies, as well as a social security card.

In an appeal to residents on Saturday, Mamdani encouraged participation in the snow shoveling program, urging them to visit local sanitation garages with the necessary paperwork, which can easily be accessed online.

“If you’re looking to contribute to your community and earn a bit of extra income, consider becoming an emergency snow shoveler. Simply bring your documentation to your nearest sanitation facility,” the mayor announced during a press briefing.

Those who take on the shoveling challenge will receive $19.14 per hour, with the rate increasing to $28.71 after surpassing 40 hours of work in one week, as detailed by the department’s website.

The mayor is a member of the NY-chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, which vehemently opposes Voter ID law The SAVE Act, deeming it racist.

“Our candidates for office stand firm against racist voter ID laws and secret poll taxes like the ‘SAVE America Act,’” The DSA’s website stated.

Social media users icily mocked Mamdani over the apparent hypocrisy.

“This is Jim SNOW 2.0,” Fox News host Jimmy Failla quipped on X.

“No joke. To register to shovel snow in Mamdani’s NYC….for the impending snowstorm, you need two types of identification. Can’t make this up,” X user Casey Cook posted.

“Mamdani’s snow shovellers must be ‘Eligible to work in the United States,’” an X user posted above a gif of Greta Thunberg mouthing “how dare you.”

Gotham can see as much as 24 inches of snow in a massive blizzard set to hit the East Coast on Sunday and Monday.

Wind gusts can hit as much as 60 miles per hour and one through three inches of snow is set to fall per hour as the storm rages.
