A beloved pair of bald eagles in California might be forced to leave their nest due to a proposed upscale housing project nearby.
The organization Friends of Big Bear, known for capturing and sharing the daily lives of the eagles Jackie and Shadow with a global audience, has issued an urgent appeal to halt the development planned less than a mile away from the eagles’ home.
In a statement, the conservation group expressed concern, noting that experts have consistently highlighted the potential “significant detrimental impact” the housing project could have on the bald eagles. The proposed development is located on the north shore of Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino National Forest.

“The development could severely hinder Jackie and Shadow’s ability to raise their young, with a real risk of them abandoning the area altogether due to the destruction of the North Shore,” the group warned.
The proposed Moon Camp project includes 50 luxury homes and a marina with space for 50 boats. Friends of Big Bear have long opposed this development, engaging in legal battles for years to block its construction.
The group’s latest push centers on a fundraising campaign following the death of beloved Friends of Big Bear Executive Director Sandy Steers, who helped launch the bald eagle cam more than decade ago.
“We need everyone to become Jackie and Shadow’s hero” Steers said before her
death, according to the group.
Viewers worldwide have tuned in through the years to watch the feathered pair, who welcomed their first egg of the year late last month — only for a raven to swoop in and attack the nest while Jackie and Shadow were away.
