Some major UK stores are locking their chocolate in plastic cases as a national body reports shoplifting is on the rise.

The UK Association of Convenience Stores has raised the alarm over the escalating issue of retail crime, describing it as a “serious and growing problem.”

In a recent post on social media platform X, the association revealed that alcohol, confectionery, and meat are currently the top three items most frequently stolen from convenience stores, according to their latest crime insights.

While alcohol and meat have already been granted anti-shoplifting protections in the form of protective casings, the BBC has now reported that chocolate is joining them in some stores and chains.

Retail powerhouse Sainsbury’s has acknowledged this trend, stating in an interview with the BBC that they are making concerted efforts to safeguard products that are often the targets of theft.

There is a prevailing belief that the stolen confectionery items, such as chocolate, are being resold by organized criminal groups.

Sainsbury's have made a public effort to demonstrate their support for Ukraine by also removing Russian-made vodka from their shelves.

According to the British Retail Consortium, there were 5.5 million recorded shoplifting incidents across the UK last year. However, the true figure, including thefts that went undetected, is expected to be significantly higher.

The consortium further highlighted that organized crime rings are increasingly focusing on high-value goods that can be easily resold, taking advantage of the minimal repercussions from law enforcement.

The cost of the detected shoplifting came to nearly £400 million ($764.7 million).

“Theft remains a huge issue, with an increasingly concerning link to organised criminal gangs, who continue to systematically target one store after another, stealing tens of thousands of pounds worth of goods in one go,” BRC chief executive Helen Dickinson said.
