A Connecticut man accused of becoming fixated on his former girlfriend allegedly planned to kill her by stabbing before carrying out the deadly attack, authorities said.

Matthew Almontes, 41, is charged with murder in connection with the death of Tisha Marinoccio, also 41, the New Haven Police Department announced.

Almontes is also charged with tampering with evidence. He remains jailed on a $1.5 million bond.

Police said Almontes and Marinoccio appeared to live in the same apartment building on the 300 block of Orange Street in New Haven. The two had previously dated, but were no longer together when the fatal violence occurred.

According to a police report obtained by the New Haven Register, an employee at the apartment building told investigators that Almontes had been talking for months about stabbing Marinoccio.

On Monday, Almontes allegedly told the employee, “I’m going to kill her. I’m gonna stab her and they’re not gonna find a weapon.”

The employee further claimed that Almontes had grown obsessed with Marinoccio and appeared to be experiencing “mental deterioration,” according to police.

On Wednesday, police said the woman called them, saying she had been stabbed by her ex-boyfriend — identified as Almontes — adding that he left her apartment with the weapon. “Upon arrival, they located Marinoccio inside her apartment suffering from a stab wound.”

Paramedics brought her to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Officers searched the area outside, found Almontes, and detained him.

“They also located the knife he used inside a dumpster in the rear alley of the apartment building,” the law enforcement agency said.

Police allegedly looked through surveillance footage and found the suspect “entering and exiting the victim’s apartment as well as exiting the rear of the apartment building, where he discarded an unknown object inside the rear-alley dumpster.”

The defendant apparently declined to speak with investigators. He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 26.
