Tragedy struck a Brooklyn construction site on Thursday morning when a trench collapse resulted in the death of one worker and left another critically injured, police have reported.

Authorities, including firefighters and police officers, responded to an emergency call at approximately 8:30 a.m. The incident occurred at a construction site located on Jefferson Street, between Wilson and Central Avenue in the Bushwick neighborhood, according to the NYPD.

Emergency medical services swiftly transported the victims to a nearby hospital. Sadly, a 47-year-old worker succumbed to his injuries, while a 40-year-old was critically injured but remains in stable condition, police disclosed.

The incident took place at a two-story building, where construction work was underway to extend the building’s height. This was confirmed by the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB), which had issued a permit for the foundation work.

According to the DOB, as the workers were clearing debris to initiate foundation work, the foundation of an adjacent building gave way, burying them under fallen rubble.

In response, the DOB has enforced a full stop-work order at the construction site and issued partial vacate orders for the adjacent properties to ensure safety.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate the incident.
