The junior Coalition partner convened a party room meeting this morning to select the successor to Littleproud. In this gathering, Matt Canavan emerged victorious over contenders Bridget McKenzie and former deputy Kevin Hogan.

The Nationals traditionally keep the exact vote counts confidential, so the specific margin by which Canavan won remains undisclosed.

Meanwhile, Victorian MP Darren Chester was appointed as the deputy leader.

Party whip Michelle Landry, while announcing Canavan’s triumph, remarked, “We’ve got a mighty battle coming up ahead of us, and we have two years to improve our standing in the polls. We believe today’s decision reflects a choice for strong leadership, and we’re eager to move forward and tackle the challenges ahead.”

Littleproud had announced his resignation just yesterday afternoon, expressing that he felt “exhausted” and lacked the energy to continue at the helm of the party.
