Off-duty NYPD cop shoots man in the head after tracking his wife's stolen car: sources

An off-duty NYPD officer was involved in a dramatic incident late Monday night in the Bronx, where he shot and critically injured a man suspected of stealing his wife’s car. Sources within law enforcement have confirmed the details of the confrontation.

The officer, who is part of the Public Security Section of the department’s Intelligence Bureau and frequently assigned to Gracie Mansion, discharged his weapon on West 231st Street near Albany Crescent in the Kingsbridge area around 9:10 p.m. The gunfire struck the 30-year-old suspect in the head, according to reports from the scene.

Following the shooting, the injured man was transported privately to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital. Medical professionals have reported that he is in critical condition as they continue to provide him with necessary care.

The altercation began when the officer managed to locate the car that had been previously reported stolen. Upon arrival, he encountered the 30-year-old and another individual believed to be connected to the theft, leading to the violent encounter.

By Tuesday afternoon, the officer had not been taken into custody, leaving questions about potential charges unresolved. Meanwhile, he has been placed on modified duty as the police department’s Force Investigation Division delves deeper into the incident.

He was placed on modified duty, sources said. The investigation is ongoing by the department’s Force Investigation Division, according to police.

The violence happened in the confines of the NYPD’s 50th Precinct, where three shootings with seven victims had been reported in 2026 through Sunday, according to department data.

At that time in 2025, no shootings had been reported within the precinct’s boundaries.
