Coast Guard offloading damaged shipping containers

The U.S. Coast Guard is currently engaged in a delicate operation to safely remove over 100 shipping containers from a cargo vessel docked at the Port of Long Beach, following what has been described as a challenging situation.

On Thursday, aerial footage revealed a concerning scene with numerous containers precariously stacked, some dangerously close to toppling into the ocean. Videos depicted the large containers in unstable and awkward arrangements.

The cargo ship, OOCL Sunflower, embarked from Taiwan on February 23 but faced severe weather conditions in the Northern Pacific. Fortunately, the vessel and its 27 crew members remained unharmed, though officials reported that 32 containers had fallen overboard, with about 60 sustaining damage and 42 being dislodged.

The ship made its way to Long Beach on March 12, but authorities held it offshore for several days due to concerns about the stability of its remaining cargo. The ship is capable of carrying up to 16,828 20-foot cargo containers.

Among the cargo were raw materials essential for the production of semiconductors, as well as rubber, propellants, and refrigerants, according to ABC 7.

Contractors have thoroughly inspected each container, conducting air quality monitoring and heat detection to ensure safety. So far, there have been no reports of pollution at the port. A safety perimeter of 100 yards has been established around the vessel, as noted by Patch.
