LaGuardia Airport shut down after deadly plane crash

In a tragic turn of events, LaGuardia Airport was thrust into chaos following a fatal plane crash that occurred late Sunday night. This incident, which left two pilots dead and 41 passengers hospitalized—some in critical condition—prompted authorities to close the airport for most of Monday to conduct a thorough investigation.

Authorities have confirmed that the closure will extend until at least 2 p.m. on Monday. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) swiftly implemented a ground stop for all flights at LaGuardia immediately following the crash, which took place just before the stroke of midnight. Main access roads to the airport were also temporarily shut down as part of the emergency response.

The crash involved an Air Canada flight arriving from Montreal. The regional jet collided with a rescue truck on runway 4. This emergency vehicle was responding to an unrelated incident when the tragic accident occurred, according to officials.

Adding to the turmoil, this disaster coincides with an ongoing funding crisis at the Transportation Security Administration, which has already been causing significant disruptions. Airports across New York City, including JFK and Newark, have been plagued by extensive security lines, alongside numerous delays and cancellations.

The aftermath of the crash has only exacerbated the situation, with travelers facing even more uncertainty and inconvenience as the investigation continues to unfold.

The regional jet from Montreal struck the rescue truck, which was responding to a separate incident around 11:40 p.m., officials said.

“The Port Authority Police Department is working closely with our airline partners as well as federal authorities and will provide additional updates as more details become available,” the airport said in a statement.
