Big Apple bank bandit caught after 5-day March spree that netted him this much money

A notorious bank robber with a penchant for heists was apprehended on Wednesday following a five-day crime spree throughout New York City that netted him a mere $600.

Gustavo DeJesus-Torres, aged 33, was taken into custody in Newark, New Jersey, due to a series of bank robberies he allegedly committed in New York City last month, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

During the period from March 13 to March 17, DeJesus-Torres attempted to rob six Chase bank branches, targeting locations in Downtown Brooklyn, Flatbush, Harlem, the Melrose area of the Bronx, and the Queens neighborhoods of Long Island City and Jackson Heights, as reported by The Guardian.

In each attempted robbery, DeJesus-Torres handed a note to the bank teller, demanding money and threatening harm if his demands were not met.

Despite his efforts, DeJesus-Torres only managed to successfully rob three out of the six banks. His haul included $320 from the Jackson Heights branch, $265 from Flatbush, and just $20 from the Harlem location.

The U.S. Marshals Service, in collaboration with the NYPD and Newark police, utilized surveillance footage, investigative leads, and public tips to track down and arrest the fugitive.

DeJesus-Torres’ rap sheet shows this isn’t his first rodeo.

In June 2021, he was arrested in New Jersey after robbing a Chase bank in Newark and escaping with $6,000, the outlet reported.

“I’m heavily armed, don’t make a scene,” the bandit allegedly warned the Newark teller at the time.

He is also believed to have been involved in an April 2025 TD Bank robbery in TriBeCa, where he walked away with $600.

DeJesus-Torres faces charges for violating the terms of his federal supervision and additional charges related to the recent bank robberies.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety of our communities and holding those responsible for their crimes accountable,” said Nicholas Ricigliano, acting US Marshal for the District of New Jersey.

The US Marshals Service did not reply to The Post’s request for comment.
