Milk producers have asked Australian supermarkets to lift the price of homebrand milk to help dairy companies struggling with double fuel and fertiliser hikes.

Tim Bale, president of eastAUSmilk, is currently awaiting feedback after reaching out to major grocery retailers regarding a potential price adjustment. This change aims to keep Australian milk producers competitive in the market.

Meanwhile, Australian milk suppliers are grappling with rising costs for milk bottles and lids, attributed to a shortage of resin within the country.

Nick Viropoulos, general manager of Nick’s Food, Milk, and More, received a letter on Wednesday from his milk supplier indicating that the prices of bottles and lids are expected to double.

“Initially, this will translate to an additional 20 cents per bottle, and it’s uncertain how much further it might increase,” he remarked.

Viropoulos highlighted that the resin shortage is specific to Australia, as the country is dependent on China for its resin production.

“China is our sole provider of resin used in manufacturing milk bottles and other plastic containers for beverages,” he explained.

“Now that there’s a shortage of petroleum going all over the world, they’re keeping the resin for their domestic market and they can’t send any to Australia.

“Unfortunately the producers in Australia are forced to air freight it out of the USA at US dollar rates.”
