Second arrest made in 'drive-by style' shooting in Lake City

The Lake City Police Department has confirmed the arrest of a second individual in relation to a recent drive-by shooting incident.

On Friday, authorities revealed that the suspect in custody was allegedly the driver of the vehicle from which the shooter fired. This development follows the incident that took place on Thursday, April 2, near the intersection of NW Bascom Norris Drive and NW Oakland Avenue in Lake City, Florida.

Officers responded to the scene following a gunshot detection alert from the FLOCK system. Upon their arrival, they discovered shell casings and vehicle debris, suggesting a collision had occurred in the area. Further investigation led police to discover that a victim suffering from gunshot wounds had been admitted to HCA North Florida Hospital.

Investigators determined that the altercation involved a Ford Mustang chasing a Toyota Tundra. During the pursuit, 23-year-old Jamal Waters, an occupant of the Mustang, allegedly fired several shots at the Tundra. Waters has since been apprehended and charged in connection with the shooting.

Police say that through their investigation, it was determined that a Ford Mustang had been pursuing the driver of a Toyota Tundra before an occupant of the Mustang, identified as 23-year-old Jamal Waters, fired multiple rounds.

Waters was later arrested after being identified and connected to the shooting.

Police say that as part of their continued investigation, the driver of the Mustang was identified as 41-year-old Leon McCrutchen.

McCrutchen was arrested and charged as a principal to Attempted Second Degree Murder for his role in pursuing the victim, facilitating the shooting, assisting in fleeing the scene and concealing evidence.

“This arrest reflects the continued work of our detectives to hold all individuals involved in violent crimes accountable,” says Police Chief Gerald Butler. “Anyone who participates in or assists with this type of behavior will be identified and prosecuted.”
