In a shocking incident captured on video, an allegedly intoxicated driver fatally hit two pedestrians before crashing his vehicle into a North Hollywood residence early Sunday morning.
Authorities have taken the driver into custody following the chaotic series of collisions, which included hitting a parked car and creating a large hole in the wall of a North Hollywood home.
The suspect, identified as Vidal Cruz Jr. from Pacoima in northeastern Los Angeles, was apprehended after a tragic sequence of events that involved his car plowing into three parked cars and a house, as reported by ABC 7.
The accident unfolded on Colfax Avenue at approximately 2:25 a.m. Sunday. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Cruz Jr., aged 31, drove his gray Acura into a man and a woman as they exited a parked Toyota Camry.
The male victim, believed to be in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the female victim, in her 50s, succumbed to her injuries later at the hospital.
KTLA 5 aired dramatic footage showing the suspect’s vehicle crashing into cars parked in a driveway, with a resident asleep just on the other side of the wall.
Dramatic video, as shown by KTLA 5, showed the suspect striking the cars parked in the driveway of the home while someone slept on the other side of the wall.
“He wasn’t as scared or as shocked as he should’ve been. That’s what I noticed,” Diego Rojas, who lives at the home, told ABC 7 of the driver. “He was just trying to get out of his car as if nothing happened, but two people passed away.”
The LAPD said Cruz was booked on two counts of murder, with his bail set at $4 million.
“It’s just crazy. I just got that car, and you would think that when you’re home, it’s the safest place you can have your stuff, but you never know when it’s your time and when bad things can occur,” another neighbor, Walter Morales, told ABC 7. “It’s just crazy to me, and I’m still processing it.”
