President Trump tells The Post US-Iran talks 'could be happening over next two days'

Trump Hints at Possible US-Iran Negotiations in Coming Days

ISLAMABAD — President Trump revealed to The Post on Tuesday that further peace negotiations between the US and Iran “might occur in the next couple of days” in Pakistan’s capital.

Initially, during a phone conversation, Trump had noted that the talks were underway but progressing “a bit slowly.” He suggested that a subsequent round of direct discussions aimed at ending the ongoing seven-week conflict would probably take place in Europe.

However, just thirty minutes later, Trump reached out again to provide an update.

“You’d do well to stay put,” he advised, referring to Islamabad. “Something might unfold in the next two days, and we’re leaning towards heading there,” he explained. “It’s more likely, and do you know why? Because the field marshal is doing an excellent job.”

Trump was speaking about Pakistan’s Field Marshal Gen. Asim Munir, with whom he developed a rapport the previous year during Pakistan’s brief conflict with India. That clash concluded after only four days, following a peace agreement facilitated by US intervention.

“He’s outstanding, which increases the likelihood of our return there,” Trump remarked. “Why should we go to a country unrelated to the situation?”

The president also indicated he was not pleased with reports that the US had asked Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment program for at least two decades during this past weekend’s unsuccessful talks.

“I’ve been saying they can’t have nuclear weapons” he said, “so I don’t like the 20 years.”
