Delaware Marathon Running Festival racer celebrates early, loses by 2 seconds: viral video

Being the first is not always about crossing the line first.

In an unexpected twist at the Delaware Marathon, a front-runner found himself overtaken just steps from victory. His premature celebration allowed a fellow competitor to seize the win in a dramatic finish.

A video capturing this moment, now viral on Instagram, shows the frontrunner nearing the finish of the Delaware Marathon Running Festival with arms aloft, basking in what he thought was a sure triumph.

However, unbeknownst to him, another racer, about 50 yards back, was gaining momentum and closing the gap with astonishing speed.

The atmosphere turned electric as the second-place contender charged forward, with the person filming the scene cheering him on with palpable excitement.

Just as the apparent winner lifted his arms in triumph, the determined rival sprinted past him at the last moment, clinching a surprising victory right at the finish line.

“He got it! He got it!” the filming is heard screaming.

The winner, 24-year-old Joshua Jackson of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, clocked a stunning 2:43:11, edging out his celebrating opponent, Carson Mello, by just two seconds at the finish line, according to Chrono Track, a race timing and event management company.

The viral video — viewed more than 400,000 times since being posted — drew a flood of comments pointing out the lesson the second-place finisher should take away from the moment.

“Never celebrate til you cross the finish line!!!” one user wrote.

“He was taking that victory stroll too soon!” wrote another.

“Gotta run through the tape my boy,” another commented.

The Delaware Marathon Running Festival, the state’s first and largest running festival, has been held annually since 2004, taking runners through historic downtown Wilmington along the Brandywine River and Jack Markell Trail before finishing at Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park, according to the City of Wilmington.
