Swedish Hospital shooting Chicago: Alphanso Talley, charged with killing CPD Officer John Bartholomew,

CHICAGO (WLS) — The individual accused of the shooting at Swedish Hospital, which resulted in the death of Chicago Police Officer John Bartholomew and left another officer critically injured, is scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday.

Alphanso Talley, who has an extensive criminal background, will be facing the court for charges unrelated to the recent incident at Swedish Hospital.

According to court documents, Talley had an outstanding arrest warrant prior to the shooting, as he allegedly absconded from electronic monitoring.

The 26-year-old has accumulated over six felony charges since 2017, including two counts of robbery, an assault on a corrections officer, and a carjacking incident.

Following the court session on Monday, leaders from the police union and some elected officials criticized the judiciary for releasing violent offenders back into the community under electronic monitoring.

Eileen O’Neil Burke, the Cook County State’s Attorney, has consistently raised concerns about the electronic monitoring system, which was handed over to the Chief Judge’s office about a year ago.

Chief Judge Charles Beach declined to comment.

Talley is charged with several felonies in connection to the officers’ shootings, including murder and attempted murder.

An Indiana woman has been charged federally with making a material false statement in the acquisition of a firearm in connection with the gun used in the double shooting, according to court documents.

Olivia Burgos bought the gun on May 27, 2024 in Merrillville, Indiana, court documents say. The documents say Burgos bought the gun for her boyfriend at the time.

As the city mourns the death of Officer Bartholomew, his partner remains in critical condition. Sources said the partner is fighting for their life.

The Chicago Police Department and city leaders continue to ask for prayers for the 57-year-old officer, who survived Saturday’s shooting and is still being treated here at the hospital.

The officer is a 21-year CPD veteran and was shot alongside his partner.

Prosecutors said the suspect, Alphanso Talley, shot Bartholomew in the head.

The second officer, whose name has not been shared yet, was shot in the face.

Officer Carlos Yanez Jr. who was also shot in the face during a shooting that took the life of his partner CPD Officer Ella French back in 2021.

He said he’s hopeful this officer, too, will make a full recovery, like he did.

“I hope that he makes a miraculous recovery and is with us and stays with us,” Yanez said. “And for the families, just be strong right now. I know what they’re going through. I just… we gotta pray. You’ve all prayed for me, so please pray for the families.”

Bunting now hangs at CPD headquarters as well as the 17th District – where both officers were based.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling sharing a statement that reads in part, “This shooting was a stark and heartbreaking reminder of the dangers our officers face all too often on this job. I encourage every Chicagoan to join us in supporting our officers and their families in these difficult days ahead.”
