Taylor Swift has been inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, joining fellow honorees Lyle Lovett, Shawn Camp, Lee Thomas Miller, Bruce Channel and J.I. Allison.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Swift was just 14 when she signed her first publishing agreement in Nashville. More than two decades later, with 14 Grammy Awards to her name, she returned to the city’s songwriting community as one of its newest Hall of Fame members.

The honor marked Swift’s second Hall of Fame induction this year. She was recognized Monday at the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala, where a packed ballroom brought together leading performers, songwriters and country music figures.

“I knew from the time I wrote my first song that even if it couldn’t be my career, it would be my passion,” Swift said.

Swift said she absorbed wisdom from veteran writers, learning to overcome writer’s block and explore the complexities of human nature—even when a collaborator was dealing with a hangover or the aftermath of a divorce.

She remembered how her mother would often collect her from high school and take her to a publishing office on Nashville’s Music Row. There, Swift turned her teenage emotions into songs with early collaborator Liz Rose. She later worked with Nathan Chapman, producer of her self-titled debut album, which was released in 2006, 20 years ago this month.

Although Swift eventually reached audiences far beyond country music, she credited Nashville’s songwriting traditions with giving her the foundation to move between genres.

“I’m so incredibly honored to be inducted into this sacred club,” Swift said.

Brad Paisley, who was among the first major stars to invite Swift on tour after the release of her debut album, introduced her as “the voice of a generation.”

Paisley joked that Swift had attended “Brad Paisley High School” as a 17-year-old, traveling across the country with him. Swift later recalled that he took a 2007 prank too far by filling her tour bus with thousands of crickets.

“For months I couldn’t sleep. Just chirp, chirp, chirp,” she said.

Lainey Wilson paid tribute with a bluegrass rendition of “Love Story,” the hit from Swift’s second album, “Fearless,” accompanied by fiddle and stand-up bass.

Swift was not the evening’s only major honoree. George Strait, widely known as the “King of Country Music,” received the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame’s Career Maker Award. A member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Strait has spent five decades choosing songs by other writers and turning them into country chart successes.

With songwriters gathered around him onstage, Strait delivered a characteristically brief speech and thanked the writers who had trusted him with their songs over the years.

“They made my career,” Strait said. “I didn’t make theirs.”

Lovett used his remarks to recognize the mentors, performers and songwriters who supported him and gave him opportunities throughout his career.

“I am humbled just to be in the room with these amazing Hall of Fame songwriters and amazing recording artists,” Lovett said. “It is such a privilege to be able to go through your life and do what you want to do.”

Allison, who died in 2022, played with Buddy Holly’s band, The Crickets, and helped write enduring songs including “That’ll Be The Day” and “Peggy Sue.” Camp, a highly accomplished multi-instrumentalist known for playing guitar, fiddle and other instruments, co-wrote Garth Brooks’ “Two Pina Coladas” and Brooks & Dunn’s “How Long Gone.” His songwriting credits also include hits recorded by Blake Shelton and George Strait, along with numerous bluegrass songs.

Channel co-wrote “Hey! Baby!,” which later appeared in the film “Dirty Dancing” and became a country hit for Anne Murray and other artists. Miller’s credits include the award-winning songs “You’re Gonna Miss This,” recorded by Trace Adkins, and “In Color,” performed by Jamey Johnson.
