Spirit Airlines pilot gave emotional farewell to passengers after company announced shutdown

A Spirit Airlines pilot struggled to hold back tears as he delivered the heartbreaking announcement to passengers mid-flight that the airline was shutting down. This emotional moment was captured in a viral TikTok video.

In the video, the visibly shaken pilot informed the passengers that they were on one of the airline’s final flights after learning that Spirit Airlines had ceased operations. This came after a last-ditch $500 million bailout request from the Trump administration was unsuccessful.

“We’ve been tracking all our planes today, knowing it might be our last day, and it appears it is,” the pilot said, his voice trembling as he shared the devastating news.

He continued, explaining that their flight was among the last to land, and that all other Spirit flights had already touched down, with no more taking off. Passengers en route to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in Texas reacted with gasps and groans of disbelief, as seen in the video.

“It’s been a crazy journey,” the pilot reflected. “I’ll speak for myself when I say I remember only the good times, not the bad. We’ve been flying since 1983, for 43 years, and sadly, it’s come to an end. Thank you for your support over the years. Onward and upward, right?”

Spirit Airlines, known for its ultra-low-cost fares, had been struggling financially for years and finally collapsed on Saturday. This closure resulted in the loss of approximately 17,000 jobs and left thousands of passengers stranded due to 277 canceled flights.

Spirit promised inconvenienced customers refunds, but United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue and Southwest all capped their prices for those looking to get to their destinations aboard a new airline.

President Trump had contemplated the hefty bailout for Spirit Airlines, but ultimately, that deal fell apart.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy later pointed the finger at predecessor Pete Buttigieg, blaming Spirit’s collapse on the Biden administration’s 2024 decision to kill a $3.8 billion JetBlue merger.

“Spirit tried to merge with JetBlue. The Joe Biden-Pete Buttigieg administration and DOJ tanked that deal,” Duffy told ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday. “Immediately after that, they filed for bankruptcy.”

“This was in the works for some time. I’m proud of the American airlines that have stepped up to take care of the passengers of Spirit, making sure they get home.”
