NJ beaver that attacked boy tests positive for rabies

In a startling incident that has captured widespread attention, an aggressive beaver attacked an 8-year-old boy in New Jersey. The young victim demonstrated quick reflexes by hurling the animal back into a lake, a moment captured on video that quickly gained viral status. Authorities have since confirmed that the beaver tested positive for rabies.

The unruly beaver had already bitten several individuals at Lake Henry, located within the Continental Soldiers Park complex. It was during this spree that the animal pursued and bit the boy, who was fishing alongside his family.

During the investigation, local police alerted animal control after noting the beaver’s unusual behavior. According to Capt. Michael Blondin of the Mahwah Police Department, the rodent was exhibiting signs that suggested it might be ill, prompting further testing.

On Tuesday, the Mahwah Township Health Department announced via Facebook that the beaver had indeed tested positive for rabies. This development has prompted immediate public health measures.

The department’s statement urged, “Individuals who were bitten are currently receiving treatment. If you have had any contact with this animal, please notify the Mahwah Township Health Department immediately.” It added that anyone who interacted with the beaver should consult a doctor for medical evaluation. The public was also advised to steer clear of wildlife in the area.

“You will need to be assessed by a doctor for medical treatment. Everyone is advised to avoid wildlife,” it went on.

The unidentified 8-year-old boy was with his family at Lake Henry at around 6 p.m. Sunday “when the beaver exited the lake and charged him,” Capt. Blondin said earlier.

“The child began to run away but tripped. The animal bit the child in the upper thigh and continued to attack him,” he added.

No further updates have been given about his condition.

No details were given on the beaver’s fate but rabies is usually fatal in animals.
