An Illinois-based food company has issued a recall for multiple snack products over fears of potential salmonella contamination, as detailed in a notice from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The recall includes various nut and corn mixes produced by John B. Sanfilippo and Son, which are marketed under the brand names Southern Style Nuts, Fisher, Squirrel Brand, and Good & Gather.
The Good & Gather trail mix, inspired by Mexican street corn, was sold at Target, whereas the other products were distributed through different retail outlets, online platforms, and QVC, as noted in the FDA announcement.
This precautionary recall was prompted by the use of dry milk powder, which was previously recalled by California Dairies. Although the seasoning passed salmonella tests before being used, John B. Sanfilippo and Son decided to recall the products as a safety measure.
The FDA advises consumers who have bought any of these products to refrain from consuming them and to return them to the place of purchase for a complete refund or a replacement.
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause illness when transmitted through contaminated food or water. It poses a significant health risk, particularly to young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
The snack mixes contain dry milk powder previously recalled by another food company, California Dairies. The FDA said the seasoning tested negative for salmonella before it was used for the products and that John B. Sanfilippo and Son initiated the recall as a “precautionary measure.”
“Consumers who have recently purchased the items listed below should not consume these products and should return them to the store of purchase for a full refund or replacement,” the FDA said in the recall notice.
